On June 6, 1944, the allied powers landed 73,000 Americans, 61,715 British, and 21,400 Canadians on the shores of Normandy, France to try and get through German lines. Supreme commander of the allied expeditionary force was Dwight Eisenhower. Overall command to ground forces was given to Bernard Montgomery. The allied powers liberated France successfully from German control.
