For about two years, the allied powers had been making a plan of how to liberate France from German control. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was given the task of planning the battle. The final plan/strategy involved a 5 pronged attack on the beaches of Normandy, the five sectors were named: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Over 5,000 ships and planes were placed offshore for other support. Calais, a different area, had been used to make the Axis powers believe that the main attack would come from there, a small naval force was created as a decoy. In the end, the planned operation was the largest sea invasion in history.
